Basically, the difference between Bulldog jack # BD183416 and # BD183816 is the plunger. On the first one, # BD183416, it has a non-spring return plunger. This means that when you pull out the pin to drop or raise the leg, you have to manually re-insert the pin to secure the leg.
On jack # BD183816, it has a spring return. This means that after you pull the pin out to adjust the leg, a spring will put tension on the pin and automatically push it back into a hole in the jack leg (unless you are holding it out).
