Question:
Can a flat four pin plug work with this brake controller if we use an adapter that switches the vehicles flat 4 pin into a 7 pin plug. Knowing that only the running lights, brake, and turn signals will be working out of the 7 pin adapter. Assuming we also ground the lead coming out of the adapter Will this brake controller work?

You are pretty much on the right track. You will indeed need a 4-pole to 7-way adapter like part # 37185. In addition to the lighting functions provided by the 4-pole, you will also need to run the black 12-V power wire from the adapter to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp circuit breaker like part # 9510. A length of 10 gauge wire like part 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) would also be needed. The power wire is needed to supply the Echo controller that mounts between the vehicle 7-way and the trailer plug. The white wire with the ring terminal would be grounded to the vehicle frame.
Hopefully, the diagram I produced for you will make it a bit more clear.
I will link you to the install instructions for the Echo, as well as a product description video showing how the Echo works.
