Question:

Can I mount the front piece more towards the middle of the bed rail, and leave my truck box up against the cab?

While it is going to be possible to mount the front towards the middle of your truck bed, it's not recommended. Moving the mounting points away from the 4 corners of the truck bed will reduce the carrying capacity of your TracRac system and the closer crossbar spread will likely change the center of gravity on the ladders you're carrying, causing some extra bouncing and possible damage to your load.

Thule makes a Toolbox Mount kit # TH41000 specifically for the TracRac system that provides mounting points to secure your toolbox to the truck bed via the TracRac. The no drill installation makes it easy to install and you won't have to worry about a lower carrying capacity on your system.
