Is Lateral Movement Of The Hub Normal

Question:

Took the new trailer for a test drive and it seemed to tow like a dream. Our dragon boat club bought the kit with a single axle 3500 lb capacity and 15 inch rims and tires. After about 12 miles I pulled over to double check things. Reached under the fender and pulled out on the top of the tire. There was an audible noise and the entire wheel and tire moved a bit... not much, maybe 1/8 inch. The same thing happened on the other side. Lug nuts are tight. Is there some lateral movement expected or do the bearings need to be adjusted a bit? If so, how?

The 1/8" of lateral movement on the hub does not seem right. It sounds like it is possible the bearings in the hub may not be the correct size for your spindle. The best solution is to double check the bearings and measure the spindle with calipers like # PTW80157 to ensure you have the correct diameter bearings in the hub for your trailer. I have attached a helpful diagram.

You also want to make sure the castle nut is snug. I have attached a video that shows the proper way to tighten down the castle nut. He does this at the 1:45 mark.
