Can 12 Guage Wire Connect to 20 Gauge Wire With Butt Connectors

Updated 05/21/2019 | Published 05/20/2019

Question:

I am replacing the wiring harness and all lights on my utility trailer and are considering using the following: 20 Ft 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness - Wishbone Style - 30inch Ground - A20WB Optronics LED Clearance or Side Marker Light - Submersible - 3 Diodes - Rectangle - Amber Lens - MCL95AB Miro-Flex LED Combination Trailer Tail Lights - Submersible - 38 Diodes - Driver and Passenger Side - STL28RB STL29RB It appears that the above Amber Side Marker Light MCL95AB has a 12 gauge wire and the above 20 ft 4-way harness uses a 20 gauge wire. What size Quick Splice Wire Connectors would work for me?

When you have to go from a much thinner gauge wire to a thicker gauge wire with a butt connector you want to use the bigger size connector like # DW05745-10 which fits 10 to 12 gauge but the trick to getting the thinner gauge wire to fit well is to strip off 3 times as much insulation than you'd normally need and fold the core of the wire a couple times so that it ends up being thick enough for the butt connector to grab it.
