To properly use the Rhino-Rack Universal Load Assist # RR-RUSL yes, you do need to use the aluminum pole.
There are some other options available but they are a little more specific in how you can use them. If you let me know what kayak carrier you are using (if you already have one) and what roof rack system you have I can see if there are any other options available that you may be interested in.
