On your 2017 Toyota Highlander, you are experiencing feedback from your brake controller onto that stop light switch which is causing the error messages you mentioned. You will want to install a diode on the red wire leading to the brake controller to prevent this feedback and subsequent error message. There should be an arrow or label of in and out to ensure you install the diode in the correct manner as you want the power on that red wire to flow toward the brake controller not away from it.
The smallest single diode we have is the Roadmaster Single Park Light Diode # RM-690 which should work for this application.
