Towing Capacity and Parts Needed to Tow Trailer with 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6L

I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2017 Subaru Outback with the 3.6L engine and it lists a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds for a trailer without brakes and 2,700 pounds for a trailer with brakes. As you mentioned it lists a tongue weight capacity in either case of 200 pounds.

A vehicle's tongue weight capacity is usually just 10 percent of its towing capacity, but there are certain instances like on your Subaru Outback where this is not the case. I am not sure why exactly the tongue weight limit is lower on your vehicle but this is the limit the manufacturer tested and rated it for to ensure safe operation. Although 30 pounds certainly doesn't seem like a lot, I cannot recommend exceeding the capacities listed by the vehicle's manufacturer as this could potentially lead to damage or void any warranties.

If it's possible to redistribute some cargo weight on your trailer to lessen its tongue weight that will be your best option.

If you don't yet have a trailer hitch installed I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III # 76227 because of its hidden crosstube design that allows only the receiver to be visible behind the Outback. I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.

To tow a trailer you will also need a wiring harness. For this I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118467 that will install by simply plugging into factory ports behind the driver side trim panel to provide you with a 4-Way connector to power a trailer's basic signal lights.
