can i mount directly on the wall or is a cutout required?

The Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 was designed to fit into a cutout like what the picture I attached shows. The wires on the back would prevent it from being able to mount flush.
Wall cutout size: 3-9/16" long x 3-7/16" wide x 1" deep
