Suspension Enhancement for 2016 F-150 2WD Towing 6K Trailer with Weight Distribution

Updated 01/15/2019 | Published 01/14/2019

Question:

I have a 2016 F150 2.7L 2WD and tow a 6500 pound travel trailer using an Equalizer 10K pound weight distribution hitch. The WDH has been great, but I still have some mild sway and occasional porpoising despite fine tuning the WDH setup to its sweet spot. Id like to improve the ride while towing at the upper end of my vehicles max GVWR and payload rating and have considered these 1500 pound Sumo Springs. I have some reluctance though from some on the internet suggesting Sumosprings and the WDH will counter-act each other. What is etrailers point of view on a weight distribution hitch and sumosprings? Would this be a good or bad setup? Thanks!

While it is okay to use aftermarket jounce springs like SuperSprings # SSR-116-47, in your application towing with weight distribution the best item to reduce sway in your F-150 is a leaf spring kit, RoadActive Suspension (RAS) Custom Leaf Spring Enhancement Kit # RAS3611-B.

Jounce springs offer no adjustment and they operate only once they engage with the axle. On the other hand, the USA-made RoadActive RAS system activates immediately, and at the tension you select when you install it. This kit will reduce sway and body roll and extend the life of your OEM suspension. Since you're towing near the truck's limit it makes sense to add support to its OEM suspension rather than to add separate jounce bumpers.

Once installed this bolt-on kit requires no further adjustments. The RAS carries a 2-year limited warranty and also a 30-Day money-back guarantee if you are not pleased with the performance.
