Question:
I have the 55301 30 amp surge protector but it does not work when I hook it up, with adapter, to 50 amp service. Is this normal?

The Camco RV Power Defender Voltage Protector # CAM55301 that you referenced automatically disconnects when it senses that the voltage levels are at a dangerous point. Since it automatically reconnects when the voltage levels stabilize (between 102V - 132V) I am wondering if the service that you are hooking up to is too much for the adapter. This would explain why it isn't working.
I would try testing the 50 amp service to make sure that it is outputting power and if it is you can then try testing to see if your Voltage Protector works at a different receptacle (rated for 30 amps) to ensure it is working properly.
Let me know if you are still having issues and I can help you troubleshoot further.
