How to Use Furrion AC Thermostat with Propane Furnance

My motorhome has propane heat tied into the existing thermostat with the AC. Will the wall thermostat included in the install kit be able to control my propane heat as well?

Great question, and I’m really glad you’re thinking about this before making the switch because it can definitely affect how your system functions day to day.

With the Furrion systems like the Chill Low-Profile part # FR89TQ the included wall thermostat is designed to control the AC and heat pump functions, but it is not set up as a fully integrated control for a propane furnace like many factory RV thermostats are. So out of the box, it will not control your propane heat the same way your current thermostat does, and you would typically end up running a separate thermostat for the furnace.

Some customers have switched their entire system over to the Furrion Chill Cube RV AC with Air Distribution Box part # FR69TD and then used a small 12 volt relay with the thermostat to trigger the furnace. That approach can allow both systems to be controlled from the same thermostat, but it is a custom wiring solution and not something that is plug and play or officially supported, so results can vary depending on your furnace and wiring setup.

The most reliable and straightforward setup is still to run the Furrion system for your AC and use a separate thermostat for your propane furnace, just to keep everything predictable and easy to troubleshoot.

I think I would like to stay with the low profile with heat pump and use a separate thermostat for the propane heat when needed. Thank you for answering so thoroughly and quickly

@AndrewL Hey you are welcome and thanks for replying so quickly! Since you’re keeping your propane furnace on its own thermostat, that actually simplifies things. The only thing we would want to double check is that your RV is set up for a ducted system? If that all lines up, you’re in great shape with this kit.

@Andrewl haha I'm not sure either.. did you ask the question that "Charles" asked? If so, Great question, and I’m glad you’re digging into this before making a decision since the newer R32 systems have definitely changed what’s compatible. Right now, there is not a smart thermostat available that will control both a Furrion AC system and your propane furnace together. The only smart-style thermostat we currently carry is the Waltech Vision 2.0 part # WA74FR, but it is not compatible with the newer R32 refrigerant systems like the Furrion units at this time. They are working on expanding compatibility, but it’s not available yet. Furrion is also working on their own thermostat that is intended to control both the Chill Cube system and a furnace, but it hasn’t been released yet. That upcoming thermostat is designed specifically for the Chill Cube units, like part # FR99TD, and won’t apply to the low-profile heat pump systems. It’s also worth noting that the Chill Cube does not have a built-in heat pump, so if you went that route, the only electric heat option would be adding a heat strip like part # FR35SR, which is more for taking the chill off rather than providing full heating. Since you already have a propane furnace, that may or may not be a drawback depending on how you use your RV. So your two realistic paths right now are to go with the Furrion low-profile system and continue using a separate thermostat for your furnace until Waltech upgrades their thermostats or switch to a Chill Cube setup and wait for Furrion’s new thermostat to become available.
