Question:
I am looking at getting a 5th wheel hitch for my 2004 GMC Duramax with the 6 1/2 foot bed. I am looking into getting a hitch with a minimum rating of 16000lbs and am unsure of what kind I need. I know ill need a sliding hitch. Any input would be awesome as well as some recommendations.

Since the bed length of your 2004 GMC Sierra is less than 8 feet you will need a slider hitch to allow you to make tight turns without cab interference. My favorite option for that is the 18k rated Demco Hijacker Autoslide part # DM8550034 as it slides automatically as you make tight turns. Then for a rail kit to install the hitch in the bed of your truck you'd want the custom fit rail kit part # DM8552009-71 and you'd be set.
For something a bit more economically priced the Reese 16k fifth wheel hitch slider part # RP30051 will work too but will require you to get out and operate the slider every time it's needed. The Demco rail kit mentioned would also work with this but if you wanted a matching Reese custom rail kit you'd want the part # RP50064-58.
For a 7-way to install in the bed of your truck to make connecting your trailer lights easier you would want the part # 41157. Most 7-ways will be at the rear of the truck near the bumper which doesn't work will with fifth wheel hitches. This kit installs in line with the 7-way at the rear of your truck and gives you a second one to install in the bed.
