What Size Bolt Does the Yakima Accessory Lock Housing Part # Y07220 Use

Is the washer necessary? Can I use the bolt from any hex key?

The washer you are referring to is actually an o-ring. This is going to help keep cushion the lock core as well as protecting the threads from dirt and debris. It is not a requirement but will be a good idea to use. You can always pick up an assortment of them at any local auto parts store. The lock will only work with a 5/16" diameter bolt.
