It looks like you have an old Valley Stow-A-Ball Gooseneck but it also looks like it is incomplete. Valley is no longer in business so that ball is no longer available. I've attached a photo of that style ball to help. There is not a gooseneck hitch that I'm aware of still on the market that doesn't use a locking pin, so I definitely recommend updating your system for safety.
My recommendation is to replace the unit with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit # BWGNRK1067 which is a confirmed fit for your 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.
