It looks like you have an old Valley Stow-A-Ball Gooseneck but it also looks like it is incomplete. Valley is no longer in business so that ball is no longer available. I've attached a photo of that style ball to help. There is not a gooseneck hitch that I'm aware of still on the market that doesn't use a locking pin, so I definitely recommend updating your system for safety.

My recommendation is to replace the unit with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit # BWGNRK1067 which is a confirmed fit for your 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.

The 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 2" Diameter x 3-1/2" Long Shank - Raw - 30,000 lbs # BWHB94009 has a 2 inch diameter shank and the larger 2-5/16 inch ball and base. If that fits well in the hole of your underbed system there is no reason why you couldn't use it. The biggest issue is fit because the ball needs to sit above the bed and be secured underneath. If the 3-1/2 inch shank allows this with the required lock washer and nut, then you'd be good to go. Obviously I can't tell that from the photos, but some quick measurements would confirm whether it would fit or not.
