Question:

I have 2005 Durango that I would like to use to pull a 2 horse trailer. I figure fully loaded it will weigh about 5000 lbs, which gives it a potential tongue weight of as much as 750 lbs, too much for your hitch. I would much rather be safe than sorry. Do you have anything that would work for me?

All of the trailer hitch receivers that are designed for your 2005 Dodge Durango, like the Draw-Tite # 75162 you referenced, have a maximum tongue weight capacity of 600 pounds unless you're using a weight distribution. They increase to 900 pounds tongue weight with weight distribution, as long as your vehicle is rated that high. Since you're planning to tow up to 5,000 I recommend weight distribution anyway. Anytime your loaded trailer is at least 50 percent of the tow vehicle's weight weight distribution is the way to go.

When choosing a weight distribution hitch the most important number is the trailer's loaded tongue weight added to the amount of weight stored in the Durango behind its rear axle. You want this figure to fall within the range of the system you choose. With 750 pounds of tongue weight I recommend a 1,000 pound system since it's fair to believe you'll be adding some weight in the back of the Durango. The Fastway e2, part # FA92-00-1000, is likely a great option. It's easier to install than a lot of systems since you don't have to drill into your frame or deal with chains to set it up. If you're pushing the limit of the 1,000 pound system you can go up to the 1,200 pound e2, part # FA92-00-1200.

The Fastway doesn't include a hitch ball. It fits a 1-1/4 inch shank so part # 63840 works for a 2-5/16 inch ball or part # A-90 for a 2 inch.

I also recommend making sure your Durango is equipped to handle the trailer's weight. I checked the owner's manual and it's rather vague on the capacity. It says that all 2005 Durangos are equipped to tow up to 2,000 pounds but some are higher if they have the tow package. If you aren't aware of your vehicle's capacity I recommend contacting Dodge with your VIN so they can tell you based on how it was equipped directly from the factory.
