Question:
My travel trailer is a 2017 with good condition u bolts and plate. I know I need to get a new saddle or spring perch to weld onto the top of the axle but why would I need to get the kit with new u bolts and backing plate? What is wrong with re-using the existing hardware?

Expert Reply:
There is some debate on the topic but the general consensus is that u-bolts are a one time use type of hardware. There is an increased potential for failure when reused so it is best to just replace them when completing the flip. The tie plates are not as big of a deal but there is no sense in taking shortcuts when undertaking such a major suspension conversion. The Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit pat # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8" diameter axles or part # K71-385-00 for 3" diameter axles have everything you need and has been used many times with great success.
