Question:

I recently ordered from etrailer and installed a 4-Way harness into my tow package and then bought a 5-Way adapter since my trailer has brakes. I used tow package wiring # 118258 to first equip my vehicle with a 4-Way plug. I now have the 4 to 5-Way adapter, 20036, which needs to be connected to the reverse light circuit. There is a video for installation on a kia. I have a 2011 Santa fe thought and my reverse lights are on my liftgate. How am I supposed to run that short wire to my backup lights? It would have to go through the liftgate on the passenger side, opposite of the wiring harness which is on drivers side, down the rear passenger pillar and out to met the 4 prong. Is there another way?

First, if the trailer has electric brakes and you wish to use them using a brake controller, you will need a different set up with a 7-Way trailer connector. If the trailer has surge brakes and has an electric reverse lock out, then the 5-Way adapter would be correct, and it will need to connect to a reverse light circuit.

The wire that connects to the reverse light circuit does not have to be connected directly behind the reverse lights. You can trace the wires on the hatch and determine where they go to find a better location to tie into. You may find that you will need some additional wire, # 10-1-1.

You can also use a circuit tester, like # PTW2993, to probe the wiring to determine if an easier to reach wire carries the reverse light circuit. But you have to be very careful as it will require that the vehicle be in reverse. The emergency brake should be on with someone in the vehicle also holding the foot brake on at all times. I also recommend chocking the wheels for extra safety.
