Does Hitch Extender Typically Affect Safety Chain and Trailer Wiring Length Needed

Updated 07/16/2018 | Published 07/14/2018

Question:

Our tow vehicle is a Dodge Ram 1500 Extended Cab. We tow a 22-ft Nash travel trailer. The Dodge tailgate cant be dropped with the trailer attached. How does the hitch extender affect use of safety chains and the power cord hookup? Is there still sufficient play for hookup and turns?

Helpful Expert Reply:

Typically when using a hitch extender similar to the Roadmaster Hitch Extender part # RM-071-75 the added length doesn't affect safety chain and trailer wiring fit but if you have a setup where the chains and wiring are tight then this may be an issue. For most people they have enough slack that it's not a problem at all.

This hitch extender isn't designed for towing a trailer with though. For a similar one that is rated for towing you'd want the part # HE06 which can tow up to 3,500 lb trailer weight.
