Recommendation of Brake Controller for 2009 Nissan Titan to Activate Electric Brakes on Car Hauler

Updated 09/19/2011 | Published 09/17/2011

Question:

I have a 2009 Nissan titan XE with tow package. I bought a car hauler, dual axle with electric brakes on one axle. The truck came with a 7 pin round connector and 1 of the pins does say electric brakes, but Im not sure if it is ready to go. Do I need to buy a brake controller to use the trailer brakes?

To operate the electric brakes on your trailer you will need to install a brake controller in your 2009 Nissan Titan XE. Our most popular brake controller that I would recommend is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885. This is a proportional brake controller that will apply power to your trailers brakes in proportion to the vehicles braking. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the Prodigy P2 brake controller.

Since you have a factory tow package with a factory 7-Way you will also need the Tekonsha Wiring Harness, part # 3050-P, to connect the brake controller to your vehicle. This wiring harness will plug into the 6-pin factory brake controller port located underneath and left of the steering column. It is taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

The 2009 Nissan Titan XE with a factory tow package should have the relays needed for towing already installed in your vehicle. They will be located in the power distribution box under the hood. If you do not have the relays installed on your vehicle I do have the relays available in the CURT Relay Kit, part # C57000.

I am including a link to a video of a 7-Way being installed on a 2006 Nissan Titan and it will show where the relays are located on your vehicle.
