Question:

Can a prodigy be used/wired in place of factory brake controller on a 2011 chevy 1 ton silverado with factory brake controller? The factory unit is not a good controller. I LOVE my prodigy units in all my other tow trucks.

Yes, an aftermarket brake controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885, or the P3, # 90195, can be installed on your 2011 Chevrolet 3500 with factory integrated brake controller.

We have an article, see link, that details how to install the aftermarket brake controller, and avoid any trailer brake display message showing on the driver information center.

You will connect the red wire from the brake controller to the light blue wire with a white stripe in the brake controller wire bundle that is located under the dash.

Then, connect the black wire from the brake controller to the red wire with black stripe under the dash.

Next, connect the white wire from the brake controller to the white ground wire under the dash.

Finally, an appropriate length of 10 gauge blue wire, # 10-1-1, is needed to go from the blue wire, through the firewall, and back to the trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle. At the trailer connector sever the blue brake wire and connect the new wire to the wire from the trailer connector. This effectively bypasses the factory brake controller, and allows for reconnection in the future if the aftermarket brake controller is removed.

Many of our customers go with the P3 brake controller I mentioned because its controls and display are a bit more user-friendly than those used by the P2.
