Is the 35lb per bike limit strict per bike or is it an average? My bike is 40lbs and my goddaughters is 30lbs. Would we be ok? And would a 3rd person be able to join us assuming their bike weighed 35lbs or less? Also, I drive a 2012 prius c. Want to make sure this rack is compatible. Thanks.

The weight capacity for the Swagman Grid Lock part # S80310 is per bike cradle so you would not be able to carry a bike that weighs 40 lbs with this rack safely.
There are no trunk racks with a higher weight capacity than 35 lbs per bike at this time.
Only solution would be a hitch setup like the Draw Tite part # 24971 installed on your 2012 Toyota Prius c with a bike rack that has a higher capacity like the Saris SuperClamp EX part # SA4025F which has a 60 lb per bike capacity.
