Can a Front Mount Trailer Hitch be Used for a Bike Rack on a 2010 GMC Sierra 2500HD

Question:

I am planning on installing a Yakima bike rack and two bicycle on a gmc 2500 hd using a 31109 front hitch. Do you see any issues in doing this? Regards

It is possible to use a bike rack on a front mount trailer hitch like # 31109, but you will want to consider a few things before doing so. First, it could hinder driver visibility, not much, but there is a chance that the top of the bikes will sit above the hood, so you may not be able to see as much of the road right in front of you. Second, the bikes may block the head lights or other indicating lamps on the truck which could be dangerous.

If you cannot put the bikes in the rear because you are towing a trailer, you may be able to use the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount, # D210. This ball mount has a 350 pound capacity receiver on the top where you can add a bike rack. The tongue weight capacity is 750 pounds. The trailer tongue weight, bike rack, and the bikes will all count against the tongue weight capacity.

If you will be towing a 5th wheel trailer, I do have a solution for that as well. You could install a trailer hitch on the back of the 5th wheel. The most versatile is the CURT Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 13703. It fits box frames, I-Beam frames, and C-Channel frames. I have included a link to the installation details for you.

You could then add a bike rack rated for use behind a trailer. I have included a link to them as well.
