Question:
I am looking at getting a 2011 GMC Canyon I5.. I cant seem to find a solid answer for its towing capacity. I have a Coleman popup tent trailer listed at 2,400 pounds empty that Id like to tow. I also might need to tow with the tailgate down as the truck has a short bed. I was considering a hitch extender, but am not certain which extender would be appropriate for this configuration? Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Based on my research the 2011 GMC Canyon I5 has 242 hp and 242 ft lbs torque and can handle up to 5,500 lbs towing capacity. We have two trailer hitch receivers for this truck, but if you don't already have a trailer hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75607 which is rated much higher so your capacity will be limited by the truck and not reduced by the hitch.
For your extension, I recommend the Reese Hitch Extender with step for 2" Trailer Hitches - 18" Long # ST18 which will reduce the tongue weight of your trailer hitch by 33-1/3% but not the 50% decrease of other options like # HE18. I recommend using a locking hitch pin like # e98880 to protect your investment. These can be keyed alike if you want multiples.
You will have no problem towing your Coleman Pop Up Camper Trailer with this combination.
