Does Power Wire of Trailer Wiring for 2018 Ford Escape Have to Run to Vehicle Battery
Updated 03/12/2018 | Published 03/11/2018 >
Question:
Why do you recommend running the power wire to the battery rather than to the fuse box in the back of the vehicle. The fuse box is easier, certainly has enough power available, and the in-line fuse can still be used to protect circuit from an overload. Additionally, the in-line fuse would be easily accessible for replacement, etc. by removing the cover panel for the fuse panel. Is your sole reason because the manufacturer of the wiring product recommends the battery?

Expert Reply:
Not all vehicles can handle the additional amperage draw of the trailer taillights on the vehicle taillight circuits. Those vehicles need setup that draws power from the battery. Some vehicles have higher rated circuits that can handle this, and others need to have the power drawn straight from the battery to protect the taillight circuits. Even if the circuit you have at the rear fuse box is more than capable for the trailer wiring harness part # C56320 bypassing it and running the battery is the safest option and the method we have to recommend.
I attached a help article that covers routing the power wire for you to check out as well.
