Question:

I have researched this topic for many months now and I just need a little help. I have a 2016 Tacoma that is not equipped with the factory tow package. With that being said I have installed the curt 4-way kit from yall about a year ago just to pull small trailers with but with camping season coming along Im looking forward to pulling our camper with trailer brakes and have found the 4-way and 7-way adapter that fits in the stock location on the bumper and the wiring harness associated with it made by Hopkins . But I unlike a lot of others I do have the factory brake controller plug under the dash behind the drivers kick panel. Crazy right? My question is I know I can buy the adapter plug to hook up the brake controller but just curious how to tap the 7way wiring thats already there at the plug adapted into the conversion kit yall sell to actually make the brake controller functional.

You can basically hardwire a brake controller install to your 2016 Toyota Tacoma and then just run the wire to the current 7-way wiring you have.

Since you have a 7-Way you will only need a few more components to complete a brake controller install on your vehicle.

First let's start with a brake controller. I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to set up.

Next, for a wiring kit to install the brake controller to the 7-way you would want the Wiring Kit for 2 and 4 Brake Electric Brake Controllers # 5506. This will provide the power source and ground for the wiring for the brake controller. You will need to test the wires from the brake pedal switch of your vehicle to find a circuit that has voltage when the brakes are applied and none when not applied. This will be the circuit you will run the red wire to.

Finally you will need to run a length of 10 gauge wire (part # 10-1-1) from the brake output circuit of the controller to the brake output circuit of the 7-way (blue wire). The # 10-1-1 is sold by the foot so you will need to order a quantity of the amount of feet you will need.
