Tire Pressure in Kenda Trailer Tires Size 4.80-12

Published 01/27/2018

Question:

Kenda 4.80x12 990# 6 ply Load range c 90# recommended pressure. I have a jet ski trailer converted to tow a 200# Inflatable boat. Do I have to run at 90#s or can I run at a lower pressure to avoid the harsh ride and bouncing?

The Kenda 4.80-12 Load Range C tires, part # AM10062, should always be inflated to 90 psi when they're cold. Running them at a lower psi might make the ride less stiff but it also will compromise the integrity of the tire. Trailer tires are designed to always be run at maximum psi and when they aren't it causes varying stress on them, which can cause heat build up and eventually failure. If nothing else it will cause uneven treadwear and decrease the tire's lifespan.

Instead of decreasing your current tires' psi to improve your ride I recommend switching to a radial tire. It'll flex more giving you a softer ride. A radial also runs cooler and has better ground contact and traction, which improves treadwear. The Taskmaster, part # TT48012C, is a great radial replacement of the same size and load range for your trailer.
