Question:
Do you need snow chains for a 4x4

The need for tire chains all depends on your conditions and needs for driving. Although a 4-wheel drive vehicle should perform better than others in snow you may still need chains. Also, there are parts of the country that require tire chains during certain times of the year and certain weather conditions and many of them are not specific based on your vehicle. They're pretty straightforward-if you don't have chains with you, by law, you can't drive there.
The other thing you want to check is your owner's manual for any restrictions on tire chains. I found an online copy for your 2017 Toyota Tacoma and the only restrictions it mentions are a 30 mph maximum speed allowance which is pretty common for tire chains, and to only install chains on the rear tires.
I recommend Titan Chain square link chains. The square links provide the most ground contact for better traction in ice and snow. It's the most universal style of chain for different conditions.
From my research your there are 4 sizes your Tacoma could have come with from the factory. If you have non-factory sized tires let me know your tire size so I can recommend specific chains to fit. The part numbers for chain and tire size are:
For tire size 245/75-16 use # TC2221SCAM
For tire size 265/65-17 use # TC2526
For both tire sizes 265/60-18 and 265/70-16 use # TC2228SCAM
I've also linked videos on each product as well as an article on tire chains.
