Published 12/21/2017

Question:

Hello there, I have a 2008 Chevrolet 2500 Extended Cab 4x4. I currently have a gooseneck ball in the middle of my bed. 1. What would be my best bet for a 5th wheel hitch? 2. Do I need a slider?

If your Silverado 2500 is a 6-1/2-foot bed you will need a slider 5th wheel hitch; if it is a 5-1/2-foot bed you will need more turning clearance than a slider can provide and in this case you'll use a standard fixed 5th wheel hitch along with a replacement trailer pin box called a Sidewinder (also called a Revolution on the OEM side) that changes the truck/trailer pivot point from the king pin to the rotating turret on the rear of the Sidewinder. Most slider hitches provide roughly a foot of additional turning clearance but a Sidewinder gives you 22-inches of additional clearance to let you make tight turns even with a 5-1/2-foot bed truck. You can refer to the linked article for more.

If you happen to have a B&W gooseneck hitch # BWGNRK1067-5W in the truck and it is a 6-1/2 foot bed then you can use the superb B&W Companion 20K 5th wheel slider hitch # BWRVK3400-5W. This 5th wheel drops right into the gooseneck ball hole! No other install kit or bed rails are needed and you get a clear bed when you need it for cargo just by removing the Companion.

Or if you have a Curt Double Lock gooseneck you can use Rail Adapter # C16210 which drops into the ball hole to provide the equivalent of standard above-bed base rails. This would allow use of any brand of slider hitch that fits industry-standard rails, such as Curt 20K hitch # C16541.

You can if you wish let me know your bed length and the brand of your gooseneck setup and I will be glad to make specific recommendations.
