I pulled the rear ended of my vehicle apart and there is not a round connector behind the bumper. I found a square connector though do I need the 4-way?

The Hopkins trailer wiring 7-way part # HM40975 that you referenced is a fit for your 2017 Ford Explorer and will attach directly to the wiring of the vehicle without any additional wiring. Basically it plugs right in to the round connector behind your rear bumper and you'd be set.
