5th Wheel Pin Box Clearance on 2017 Ram 2500 with Rambox
Updated 10/26/2017 | Published 10/25/2017 >
Question:
Is there a way to increase the towing capability for the truck mentioned above? If the power wagon has the ram boxes does anyone make a 5th wheel kit that will work such as Anderson ultimate hitch? Thanks

There is no way to add towing capacity to a vehicle. Tow weight ratings are determined by the auto maker for the specific complement of power train, suspension and frame in the vehicle. You can add items like transmission, engine oil or power steering coolers to reduce the operating temperatures of these systems - definitely a good thing that reduces thermal stress and resulting wear - but this does not make the truck's engine, transmission or frame any beefier so tow ratings will not change. The same goes for suspension kits like air bags - these can reduce strain on the suspension but they do not add towing capacity.
The Ram trucks with the Rambox feature are not ideal for 5th wheel towing due to the reduced clearance in the bed for the trailer's pin box as it moves side to side. The best solution is a replacement pin box called a Sidewinder (or Revolution, on the OEM side) from Reese. Sidewinders actually move the trailer's pivot point to the rear by a full 22-inches. The pin box will use a wedge that locks it in the hitch, preventing it from pivoting there. The rear of the Sidewinder has a rotating turret that becomes the actual pivot point. This means the main structure of the pin box remains stationary and will not contact the Ramboxes.
Sidewinders are made to replace specific pin boxes. You can refer to the linked article that lists the original pin boxes for which a Sidewinder replacement is available. There are both standard and cushioned Sidewinders.
For instance, to replace the popular Lippert 1621 pin box we offer the 20K model # RP34FR and air-cushioned 16K model # RP61422.
