Question:
I recently bought a vehicle with a class 2 receiver- All my other vehicles have had class 3 reiceivers on them-I pull a utility trailer and a pop up camper and bike rack. Will the adaptor be fine to use or should I buy new specific class 2 hitches? I have two different ball sizes 1 7/8inch and 2 so I would have to buy 2 of each. Would prefer to get the adaptor due to not wanting 4 hitches around my garage.

Hitch adapters can be a convenient way to join accessories of different sizes, such as allowing use of a 2-inch hitch bike rack or towing ball mount in a smaller 1-1/4-inch hitch. An example of such an item is the Curt # C45785.
The "dark side" of hitch adapters like these is that they also unavoidably reduce your hitch's capacity by 50-percent because they move the actual load that is on the hitch further away. This greater distance translates into more leverage applied to the hitch and to the vehicle frame to which it is mounted. Since adapters add another mechanical junction point they also tend to allow for more motion of the installed accessory and/or more noise or rattle.
If your Class II hitch's reduced capacity (reduced from using an adapter) is high enough for the trailers' weights then apart from the extra motion/noise you will be okay from a safety standpoint.
When the opposite circumstance applies, meaning for example that you have an accessory that is smaller in size than the hitch - say a 1-1/4-inch bike rack and a 2-inch hitch - then the adapters that are required, such as Brophy reducer sleeve # HT02 will allow you to install that smaller accessory item WITHOUT any loss of weight capacity. This adapter does NOT cause a reduction of capacity because it does not change the relative positions of the hitch and load.
