Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2005 Hyundai Tucson

Published 09/23/2017

Question:

I own a 2005 Hyundai Tucson would like to get a tear/Little Guy trailer. Would the Curtis Class II hitch @ 3500 lb capacity work for that. Its a small travel trailer. Second, is this pretty simple to install, and since theres no drilling bolts is it secure.

Curt trailer hitch # C12126 for your 2005 Hyundai Tucson is rated for 300 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pound gross trailer weight like you said. It is one of the easier installs because it uses factory weld nuts inside the vehicle frame. You will likely need to clean out the weld nuts prior to installing the hitch. I have included some links that will help with that.

According to the owner's manual the vehicle itself is rated for a maximum of 150 pounds tongue weight and 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight (2.7 liter motor and trailer with brakes). Consult your owner's manual to confirm.

Since the hitch is rated higher than the vehicle you will go by the vehicle capacities and the trailer you tow will have to be within those capacities. So the hitch will be fine. The recommended ball mount for the hitch is # C45518. For a compatible 1-7/8 inch ball use # C40001 or for a 2 inch use # C40018.

And for trailer wiring you can use # 118397 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle. But, if the trailer has electric brakes then you will also need to install a 7-Way connector and a brake controller using # ETBC7 for the 7-Way. For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.

I have included some helpful links below that show and explain the ETBC7 installation.
