Determining Weight Capacity of Torsion Axle Without Part Number or Any Other Markings
Updated 08/22/2017 | Published 08/20/2017 >
Question:
I have a 2 place jet ski trailer that I am turning into a utility trailer. How do I find out what the single torsion axle is rated for when there are no name plates on the entire trailer or axle that say anything about it? From what I can tell, its 87inch from hub face to hub face. Rims that are 5 lug by 4 1/2. Part number on the back of the hubs are Dexter 8-258. Part number to the spindles look to be Dexter 69-46

Helpful Expert Reply:
Based on the 8-258 you found on your hubs, I found the Trailer Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 - 13" - 15" Wheels # 8-258-5UC1-EZ. These are Dexter hubs that fit a 2,000 lb axle. That is a typical axle weight for a Dexter number 9 torsion axle, so I would recommend that be the maximum capacity for your trailer weight and load when you turn it into a utility trailer.
