You are correct that in order to prevent battery drain while flat towing your 2017 Ford Focus, you will need to disconnect the vehicle's battery cable. However, my contact at Roadmaster recommended you disconnect the positive battery cable while towing, not the negative battery cable. This can easily be done by installing the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch for Towed Vehicle w/ Supplemental Braking System part # RM-766.

For a supplemental braking system compatible with your vehicle, I recommend using the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System part # SM99251 in addition to the 12 Volt Outlet Kit part # RM-9332 which will allow you to power the supplemental braking system even when the battery is disconnected from the vehicle.

Don't forget the Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit part # RM-751454 which is a requirement for the supplemental braking system. I have attached an installation video of both products on similar year Ford Focus's for you.
