Does Computer have to be Flashed to Install Trailer Wiring Harness on 2013 VW Touareg
Updated 07/26/2017 | Published 07/25/2017 >
Question:
VW says that the electrical system needs to be re-programmed for this to work. I think they call the reprogramming flashing. They want to charge between $150 and $200 just to flash the onboard computer. Is this accurate? How does that impact your kit? I understand the flashing changes the shift points for the automatic transmission and disables the rear facing proximity sensors and the electronic tailgate to avoid issues with both. Are these programming changes needed?

T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector Item # 118668 plugs in line with the tail light wiring on your 2013 Volkswagen Touareg and not to any factory tow package wiring so the vehicle computer would not have to be flashed.
However, if VW has a special software update that enables the vehicle for optimum performance when towing then it is a good idea to do it especially if it alters the transmission shift points to work best when towing!
