Question:
I have a trailer that I recently bought used. I am trying to service it so that I feel its safe for me to use. Part of that includes replacing the bearings. The trailer is a tandem axle equipped with two 3500 lb axles, the name plate on them says Hayes Axle Inc. I can read a partial number on the outer bearing that appears to be 44549. But this does not appear to be a standard bearing type. The closest number I can find is 44649. I can not find any identifying numbers on the inner bearing or seal. I do have measurements of the spindle. Starting from the seal surface, its approximately 1.720 inches thick. Then it steps down to the inner bearing surface which is 1.370 inches thick, 0.875 inches wide. It does not appear to be tapered. This steps down to approximately 1.070 inches thick. Its almost straight for 1.20 inches. There is a slight tapered area where the outer bearing rides, this area is approximately 0.875 inches wide. Again, my measurements arent perfectly accurate, but I used a dial caliper, so they should be within + or - 0.005 inch. Am I correct in assuming I have a #84 spindle? I will ask a brake question separately, as I will be adding brakes to this trailer. It is equipped with flanges, but the hubs are just idlers.

Based on the measurements that you gave me it looks like you have a # 84 spindle, so yes, you are correct in your assumption.
The replacement bearing and seal kit that you would need is the TruRyde Trailer Bearings and Races, part # BK2-100.
I attached a link to a video below that shows how to repack bearings for you to check out also.
