Recommendation To Solve Movement Of Hitch Mounted Bike Rack With Threaded Pin
Updated 07/17/2017 | Published 07/15/2017 >
Question:
I purchased a Yakima DoubleDown 4 bike rack from you about a year ago. I have a 2016b Subaru Outback with a dealer installed hitch. The rack fits into the hitch without the 2in. adapter provided but it tilts backwards more than i think it should. There is enough play once it is bolted that I can lift the rack up several inches from where it rests. It doesnt seem right to me and Im concerned that it is stressing the rack and the hitch in ways that it should not. It almost seems like the rack is 1 1/4 and the hitch is 1 1/2 in. Is that possible? Any ideas about what I can do? Thanks

Some factory hitches have more of a tolerance that is accepted than aftermarket parts. You may have some additional sag due to this, but being able to lift the rack several inches seems excessive. The receiver should not be 1-1/2 inches, and the 1-1/4 inch shank should fit snug once you've tightened the threaded bolt.
My recommendation is to use the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitches # RM-061-125. This will immobilize your hitch and take that slack that could cause additional issues. This accessory will work well with your bike rack and should solve your issue.
