Question:

I am replacing the leaf springs on my boat trailer. The trailer is a 2007 Magic Tilt for a 186inch Seahunt boat.It is a single axle. The boat, motor and T top, with fuel and contents weigh approximately 3200 lbs.The trailer came with 3 leaf springs and are rusting out.Would it be proper to replace the 3 leaf with 4 leaf? thanks

When picking out replacement leaf springs for your boat trailer, you will want to note both the axle weight rating and the spring dimensions on your existing system.

When measuring your leaf springs, you will want to jack up the trailer so that the axle hangs free, then measure straight across from the center of one eye to the center of the other eye. Keep in mind that older, worn out springs may have stretched over time, so if you measure a length that is not available on our site, you will simply want to get the closest length possible.

Since your trailer weight is around 3,200 pounds, you most likely have a 3,500 pound axle. You can check the axle plate for its listed capacity to confirm this. We have a few options available for replacement leaf springs designed for 3,500 pounds. You will want to choose one that matches the length on your current springs. For example, the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e54SR has a length from eye to eye of 25-1/8 inches and a width of 1-3/4 inches. As long as you have the needed length and capacity, the amount of leafs do not matter. The difference between a 3 or 4 leaf spring within the same capacity is typically just a result of how many leafs were needed to reach the stated capacity with its specific length.

I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of leaf springs as well as an article that you might find helpful.
