Question:
Could you tell me what the maximum weight I would be able to tow with a 2012 4 cylinder GMC Terrain ? It shows 1500 lbs. does this mean I need to look for something 1500 or less

On your 2012 GMC Terrain, the towing capacity is indeed 1500 lbs maximum. For this vehicle, your camper will need to be less than 1500 lbs when fully loaded for camping. You do not want to operate outside of the manufacturers capacities on this as it could cause damage to your vehicle and create unsafe driving conditions.
For a towing system if you don't already have one, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # e98865 which is rated higher than your vehicle, but you will still be limited to your vehicle specs.
For a wiring harness, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118264 if you have the factory tow package. If you do not have the factory package or are unsure, I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM11141275. You will need to remove the tail light assemblies to connect to the factory wiring behind each tail light.
For a ball mount, I recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. I've attached a help article to assist you with the proper rise or drop needed for your trailer connection.
