For your 2007 Mercury Mountaineer with 4-way flat, I recommend Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 90195 to start your 7-way conversion. This is a brake controller that is easy to use and understand with its LCD screen that takes code deciphering out of the equation. You get the information you need as well as diagnostics immediately. This controller has 3 boost settings for towing and it is adjustable to your driving preferences.
To connect this brake controller to your Mountaineer and upgrade your 4-way connection, I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. This will give you the wiring, the trailer connector, the circuit breakers and wire connectors needed to upgrade your system to a complete tow package. I've attached a diagram as well as a video to assist.
Your Mountaineer has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs, so you will want to make sure your trailer does not exceed that weight. For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 7.5K - Black # BWTS10038B. This ball mount will allow you to tow your trailer level and comes with a 2 inch and a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball. This ball mount also has a really nice stowable feature to give you a clean look and protect your shins when not in use. I recommend using a hitch lock like # BX8858 to protect your investment.
