Wider Tire Recommendation for Waverunner Beach Launches with a Loadrite Trailer and 2010 Toyota Rav4

Updated 03/17/2011 | Published 03/15/2011

Question:

I currently have stock tires/rims skinny on my 2010 loadrite trailer for my waverunner. I am considering buying wider tires for my trailer so that I wont have a problem in the soft sand. I havent tried to launch from the beach yet, so Im not sure if thicker tires are needed but I would rather not find out when Im stuck on the beach. I have a 4WD Toyota Rav4 so I think I should be able to pull it out but I have heard a bad story from my uncle who had a much larger SUV. I also heard with wider tires I cant travel as fast as I can with skinny tires?

It may be possible to use a wider tire and wheel combination on your trailer to help with launching on a beach. You will need to determine if the overall width and height of the replacement assembly will work on your traielr and not rub the frame or fenders.

The Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 inch White Wheel, item # AM3H200, may work for your application. this combination is 16-1/2 inches overall diameter and 6.6 inches wide. Measuring your trailer for clearance will tell you if the tire will fit, The wheel bolts are centered in the wheel so you will have 3.3 inches inside and outside of the bolt face with this combination.

If the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire, item # AM30790, is wider than your existing tire and the 21.9 inch height and 5.6 inch width will work on your trailer this may be a good choice also.

The speed rating for both of these tire and wheel combinations is 65 miles per hour. When changing tire sizes on a trailer you should approach speed with caution initially, to be sure that the towing characteristics of your trailer are not changed significantly.

Your biggest challenge may be keeping the much heavier Rav4 from sinking in soft sand when encountered.
