Question:
Just purchase new 16foot Airstream Sport. Dealer sold us an Equalizer hitch 400 lb max.tongue wt, 4000 lb max trailer wt. Towing is great but cant put much cargo in the trailer without exceeding the 400 lb. capacity. Can the stock bars on the Equalizer be replaced with stiffer ones? If so will the hitch have to be readjusted?

Expert Reply:
The Equal-I-zer weight distribution systems use different size bar diameters for the 400 lb system # EQ90-01-0499. They are 35-1/2 inches x 1 inch. To upgrade your system, you will need to upgrade the entire system to the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # EQ37060ET because the bar dimensions, the socket dimensions and the head are all interrelated and different sizes. Based on the GVWR of 3500 lbs I see, your 400 lb system is definitely on the light side for your tongue weight.
To determine if this is the right system for you or if you need a larger system, I recommend you determine the actual tongue weight of your loaded trailer using a scale like the # e99044 and then add to that tongue weight any cargo behind the rear axle of your towing vehicle. This all acts as tongue weight for your system. I've attached an article to help further.
