Question:

Hello, I have a boat trailer that Im wanting to convert to a utility trailer. There is currently a 3500lb axle on it measures 2 3/8inch diameter, but I do not believe that the leaf springs were upgraded when the larger axle was put on it. before I owned it Also, the hanger for the back part of the slipper spring looks like it needs to be replaced to me. If the hanger brackets need to be replaced and the leaf springs do as well, Im thinking that I should just switch over to a double eye leaf spring. My current leaf springs are 1 3/4inch wide by 25 3/4inch long. If Im changing all of this out anyway is there any reason to stay with leaf springs that are near the same length as the ones I have currently? Any advantage to going bigger? I am just getting into this all, so please let me know if any of my conclusions/reasoning are off. Please let me know if I need anything else to complete this upgrade or if I should change any of the parts listed. Heres what Im looking at purchasing from you: 2x e54SR 1x APS4 1x APUBR-1

It does appear that the hanger in the picture has been overloaded or otherwise damaged so replacing them is a good idea. And like you said, since it has to be replaced anyway you could switch to double-eye springs which are more common so parts for them are easier to find.

The springs do not have to be the same length but having it close means you won't have to do any math to ensure everything is in the best location for the trailer size and weight. You can use hanger kit # APS4 which includes 4 hangers, shackle straps, and hardware to attach the springs.

Based on the existing spring length I recommend spring # e54SR that you have referenced. So far we are right on track with each other! That just leaves the U-bolt kit. And as you might have guessed, # APUBR-1 is a great choice.

With all of this said please note that the trailer is only as strong as its weakest part. So everything from the tires and wheels, to the suspension, to the trailer coupler will all need to be rated for 3,500 pounds as well to match the axle capacity.
