Converting Trailer from 5-Way Connector to a 7-Way by Function
Updated 04/28/2017 | Published 04/27/2017 >
Question:
Hi, I have decided to change my 5 pin flat plug on my 2016 eagle boat trailer to a 7 pin round plug. As all of my vehicles have the 7pin or flat pin round connector receptacle. I dont like using the 7pin round to flat plug adapter, as its just one more thing I can forget. Im a CFESA certified electrical worker and very versed in waterproof electric work. So the connections are of no concern. In the picture youll see the 5pin flat plug on my trailer. My question is.... Can you identify the wire colors to their duty? I know the blue is likely for the reverse lights that my trailer does have. Because before I was using a 7pin round to 4pin flat and letting the 5th pin on the trailer plug just over hang. All the other lights work except the reverse lights. Which leads me to believe the blue wire is for the reverse lights. My trailer does NOT have any braking system. So if you can... please help me identify the wire colors to their duty, and I can make the connections to the 7pin connector once I acquire it from you likely you guys. Thanks in advance.

I've linked a help article that will give you the common color coding but on your trailer I wouldn't go by it. Even if they are correct you just never know so I suggest testing it.
To test it cut off the 5-way connector that's on there and connect each wire to a 12-volt power source and see what functions.
Then use a 7-way connector like the Hopkins # H20043 and connect the function to the correct leads. Even the Hopkins does not use the traditional color coding. Instead it uses the following:
White - Ground
Red - Left Turn and Left Brake (Usually yellow)
Brown - Right Turn and Right Brake (Usually green)
Green - Tail (Usually brown)
Blue - Brakes
Black - 12 Volt Hot
Yellow - Reverse
