As long as you do not use a bike that is over the 50 lbs weight capacity and as long as you have it installed properly, the Thule Insta-Gator Pro # TH93VR will work great for a long road trip with your 2012 Ford F-150.
This bike rack is very solid and actually works great with rough terrain so if you are traveling mostly interstate highways you will have no problems with it.
To help deter theft of your bike while you are making pit stops, I recommend using the Thule One-Key System Lock Cylinders # TH450200.
