Question:
I just got a highlander and my boat requires a 5 pole connector. Im thinking it probably makes sense to instead install a 7 pole round connector to future proof myself and take advantage of the 7 pole adapters from my previous vehicle. I need the backup lights connected, but I dont need a brake controller. With that background I have 2 questions: 1. am I doing the right thing by getting the 7 pole connector? 2. is there a cheaper version of ETBC7 that I can use that excludes the duplex wire and circuit breakers but contains the same adapter and mounting bracket which sounds like it attaches without drilling to the factory 4 pole bracket?

Since you are needing backup lights only you can install part # 37185. This is a 7-way that plugs into the 4-way you have on your Highlander. You can then add the backup light wire from your vehicle to the appropriate pin for the 7-way while still retaining a 4-way connector. The # 37185 comes with a mounting bracket included.
for a no-drill bracket you can use part # C57202.
If the trailer 5-pole is a flat connector you can use part # A10-7275VP. This plugs into the 7-way on your vehicle and you can then use the 5-way on your trailer. You just want to make sure you have the wires run correctly so the backup light circuit works.
You can just cut the 5-pole off your trailer and use part # PK12706.
You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the wires by function to make sure they will have the same functions on the pins.
