For your 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class I - 1-1/4", # C11422. This is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and works great for light duty towing like you are referring to.

You will also need a ball mount to go with your hitch receiver, and I recommend the Curt Class II Drawbar - 2-5/8" Rise, 3-1/4" Drop - 7-1/4" Long - 3,500 lbs, # C45521. This ball mount will require a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball like # 19256 or a 2 inch ball like # 19258.

For your trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118730. This harness connects to a factory wiring harness found in you rear cargo area on the driver's side as well as on the passenger side. This harness will simply clip into those connectors and then a power line is run to the battery to protect your vehicle system from overload or feedback.
