Question:

I am looking for a bike rack for my 2012 Mazda CX9 to transport 1-2 light weight road bikes. Will the trunk rack work, and will I be able to open the trunk with the rack on?

It keeps your bikes separate on different levels. It has ratcheting anti-sway straps that secure and stabilize your bikes. The beauty of this rack is in the simplicity of it's design.

Another rack I recommend for your vehicle is the Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier - Trunk Mount, # TH910XT. This carrier uses 6 adjustment straps to secure your carrier to your vehicle. It has cushioned anti-sway cradles that have rubber straps to secure the bikes in place and prevent bike to bike contact as well as bike to vehicle contact.

With your particular vehicle, you will be able to open the trunk with the rack on, but not with the bikes loaded.
