Is there a capped off pig tail that the wiring harness can be plugged into on the XT5?? Or does it have to be jury rigged by opening up the wires on the rear tail light system??

Yes, there is an exterior connector for the trailer wiring harness. Tekonsha has a Wiring Harness for your 2017 Cadillac XT5, part # 118720, that will provide a 4-way trailer connector for you.
If you already have a trailer hitch installed, like part # e62AR, the connection that you will be looking for is just up and to the driver's side of your 2017 Cadillac XT5. Just connect the wiring harness that I mentioned earlier and you are good to go!
